I had just ended my ten-day birding adventure in Ecuador (which is a story for another time) when I decided, since I had an amazing time, to prolong my trip a bit longer before heading back to Europe. I had never been to Colombia before so didn’t know the best birding spots in the vicinity of the capital. Suddenly I noticed new birds.

Inírida is the capital city of the department of Guainía in the east of Colombia, mere 25 km (15 mi) from the border with Venezuela. Tap water is not as cold as in Europe (and, I presume, North America), but to be called lukewarm it should be warmer. Birds The local birdlist has reached 462 species, and some 30 more are expected.

The nation of Colombia has been the victim of some bad press over the last few decades, not all of this is entirely unjustified. The government of Colombia was involved in a long-simmering and occasionally boiling war with guerilla groups in the rural parts of the country. Proud of their nation of music and color and art.

The Species per Square Mile Approach. While Colombia may have almost 2000 bird species, it is a huge country with, still, complicated long-distance travel logistics. On the other hand, small countries with relatively long bird lists offer higher species densities per square mile. And why 1000?

Finally, the Similan Islands are perhaps one of the most beautiful islands in the world and form a stunning backdrop to this species, one of the loveliest pigeons in the world. Apart from being an incredibly exciting bird, this is a species I had longed to see since my first trip to southern Africa way back in 1991.

Looking at a photo of a dozen birders on a Colombia tour, it stroke me that they were either using binoculars or cameras. Born in a different era, when bird photography was difficult, I gave many advice how to write the basic info, but the strangest thing to novices today turned out to be the advice on sketching the unknown species.
