The drongo perches above the flock, snatching insects that they disturb, and keeping an eye out for predators that might go unnoticed by its hunting flock-mates. The species is classified as Near Threatened for all the usual depressing reasons – pollution, drainage, hunting, and the collection of eggs and nestlings ( source ).

I took home a few of the pellets and found that the owls were feasting on grey squirrels and cottontail rabbits. He’s one of the managers of the specimen collection and loves a good dead bird mystery. He asked to take the pellet downstairs to do some comparisons to the collections.

Like several of my favorite NWRs, this one was established as a haven for migratory birds, most notably waterfowl, during the bad old days when uncontrolled hunting and habitat loss had put the future of even species we now think of as common in doubt. As a result, early migration season is an excellent time to visit.

White-chested Tinkerbird is one of Africa’s avian mysteries, known only from a single specimen collected in 1964 at Mayau in north-west Zambia, close to the borders of Angola and the DRC. Benson to collect birds. This has led some ornithologists to consider the specimen a hybrid of two other tinkerbirds, time will undoubtedly tell!
