It feels good to start a post with some truly attractive birds – such as two species of broadbills. Strangely, there do not seem to be many papers on this species. I took home a few of the pellets and found that the owls were feasting on grey squirrels and cottontail rabbits. He’s one of the managers of the specimen collection and loves a good dead bird mystery. He asked to take the pellet downstairs to do some comparisons to the collections.

Like several of my favorite NWRs, this one was established as a haven for migratory birds, most notably waterfowl, during the bad old days when uncontrolled hunting and habitat loss had put the future of even species we now think of as common in doubt. As a result, early migration season is an excellent time to visit.

In the Neotropics the barbets have been placed into two families, the original Capitonidae (New World Barbets) with 14 species and Semnornithidae (Toucan Barbets) with 2 species (Toucan and Prong-billed Barbet). Benson to collect birds. Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird is a woodland species that occurs widely through Africa.
