These threats are further exacerbated by the naturally low reproductive rates of these cavity-nesting birds.

Other research (cited on the rather straightforwardly named website www.genderinclusivebiology.com) found that 80% of gay swan couples successfully fledge their young, compared with only 30% for straight couples. It seems they kept a pheasant as a pet for the chick. Much cheaper than a brother or sister.

The Crested Serpent-eagle is not a vulture, but that does not keep me from mentioning a recent Economist article here, “The sudden demise of Indian vultures killed thousands of people” And while this article is behind a paywall, the original research paper is not. It deserves a lot better than being caught and locked in a cage.
