A very rural place, few people, and a landscape more reminiscent of coastal Northern Vietnam than most parts of China. Or is living on Hawaii just more pleasant? So, back to the wonderful world of pheasants in China. Wait, does that remind me of anyone? Never mind. My favorite is the Blood Pheasant.

While it is listed as Least Concern, it is rare in China – the range map in the HBW barely touches Chinese territory. The Latin name “ chinensis ” is somewhat misleading as is much more common in Southeast Asia than in China – apparently, it was chosen in the mistaken belief that the type specimen had come from China.

December’s beats found 609 birds after submitting 116 checklists from 8 countries (USA, UK, Costa Rica, China, Mexico, Serbia and Australia). The life list got off to a great start in January with ticks from Hawaii and smashed through the 4000 mark by mid January after Corey visited Jamaica.
