Week 16: South Africa and Kruger National Park

So far we have seen Impala, Duiker, Greater Kudu, Mongoose, Zebra and warthogs around the neighborhood, and yard. The mighty rhino along with the Cattle Egret. After three months in countries without woodpeckers, it was nice to find these Bennett’s Woodpeckers.

Pasir Ris Park-Singapore

We started our Singapore bird list at Pasir Ris and leaving the train station we were delighted to see several Cattle Egrets on the grass and several photographers. This area was good during our visits over the three weeks for Laced Woodpeckers and Common Flamebacks. Monk Parakeet. Two Common Flamebacks facing off.

Layover in Singapore

The path along the right (east) bank of the river leads along a cycle path with Asian Koels , Yellow-vented Bulbuls , Laced Woodpeckers and Oriental Magpie Robins all likely. Forest species are likely to include the Banded Woodpecker and Black Drongo. From the bridge here you will find herons, egrets and kingfishers.

Continuing with the topic of singing, apparently, Zebra Doves are highly valued for their singing, particularly in parts of Southern Thailand. The importance of the Zebra Doves ‘ singing is also implied in the Javanese language – apparently, “Zebra Dove” is a Javanese metaphor for a particular vocal type ( source ).
