Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks , Muscovy Ducks and Blue-winged Teals were around us, together with Green , Great and Little Blue Herons , Cattle and Great White Egrets , Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons , plus one locally rare Pinnated Bittern in the floating vegetation, as well as several dozen Neotropical Cormorants.

Disinterested Gray Langurs await us in the next tree crown; one Black-rumped Flameback woodpecker is searching the branches, while one gorgeous Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher flies by. A low branch is decorated by a Green Bee-eater and a tree top above it holds several Cattle Egrets. There is barely enough light for a photo.

The list includes Bachmann’s Sparrow , Red-cockaded Woodpecker , Crested Caracara , Snail Kite , and, oddly, Whooping Crane. From 1993 to 2004, biologists released 289 captive-raised whooping cranes into central Florida. The first farm on the left, where all the cattle are? He likes it there. Sure, the looks were distant.

This land has gone through extensive ecosystem destruction from farming cattle and soybeans. This dirt road was the soybean truck-nightmare; about every 10 minutes we had large double-trailer trucks filled with soybeans drive very fast and raise a huge dust cloud that took another 5 minutes to settle. The wide open swampy areas are perfect for easy birdwatching with the transpantaneira road that provides an easy access and becomes a raised platform that birdwatchers use for setting their spotting scopes and huge tripods. The contrast between biodiversity and human destruction is in plain sight everywhere you go!
