A Gathering at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge

As I always do on the way home, following a short visit to the San Francisco Bay Area, I take in at least one of the National Wildlife Refuges (NWR) found in the Sacramento Valley. California is blessed with 51 NWRs and Wildlife Management Areas (WMA), second only to North Dakota with 77. Click on photos for full sized images.

After all, I have written several posts on wildlife conservation and the Wildlife Conservation Pass that my co-founder Ingrid Taylar and I have been encouraging for years. Borrow pit birding near Broome

This actually benefits our local wildlife, because the rainwater then gets trapped in the borrow pit and in some instances it will sustain the wildlife right through our dry months when there is no rainfall at all. Intermediate Egret. It takes roughly 50 minutes to get there and it is not signposted.

Migrants were also present, including some Ruff, Common Sandpipers, Little Ringed Plovers , and Wood Sandpipers. Laughing Dove and Feral Pigeon were present, as were Hoopoe and Little Bee-eaters, but it was the wheatears that stood out. All in all a pretty sweet spot. Lot’s of lapwings at the moment on the site!
