A few Lesser Kestrels by the dyke wall, then a Black-eared Wheatear at some cattle fencing. What is killing them? Yet, what is killing the birds of Lake Karla? Common Kestrels could be seen, too, but were outnumbered by their more gregarious threatened cousins. This year, we had about 65 dead pelicans. Botulism? Practicalities.

On a second visit I spotted a fishing boat going east along the channel followed by over a hundred gulls and terns, including over 40 Black Terns. At the end of the road, we found two Nelson’s Sparrows who quickly flew out to a tiny bit of land in the channel. These were winter birds, due to fly north any day.

One study found that birds living in Botswana had elevated levels of lead in their bloodstreams during hunting season, presumably coming from lead bullets used on animals killed by hunters. For example, this study showed that Malachite Kingfishers spent more time hunting in locations with more fish. .” (HBW).

Most moral vegetarians list fish and fowl as animals one should not eat. If beef cattle who could not feel pain were developed, then it would be permissible to eat them. KBJ: Martin seems to think that people who abstain from meat on the ground that meat-eating causes pain would not eat “beef cattle” even if they could not feel pain.
