What is killing birds at Karla Lake (Greece)?

A few Lesser Kestrels by the dyke wall, then a Black-eared Wheatear at some cattle fencing. What is killing them? Yet, what is killing the birds of Lake Karla? Common Kestrels could be seen, too, but were outnumbered by their more gregarious threatened cousins. This year, we had about 65 dead pelicans. Botulism? Practicalities.

On a second visit I spotted a fishing boat going east along the channel followed by over a hundred gulls and terns, including over 40 Black Terns. At the end of the road, we found two Nelson’s Sparrows who quickly flew out to a tiny bit of land in the channel. These were winter birds, due to fly north any day.
