In my experience, people eat more food they are familiar with than food that is unfamiliar. Apparently, in Europe Bramblings are the species appearing in the largest flocks and are thus “an interesting case study for discussing number estimates” ( source ). They also eat more when together with other people.

When I came here for the first time, the Kerkini Lake was the only place in Europe where Dalmatian Pelicans were increasing their numbers. One of Africa’s truly exhilarating experiences is watching and listening to a honking flock of these massive birds as they appear out of the early morning mists over a wetland, to land nearby and start their wing-flapping and jumping displays. Habitat destruction, hunting and disturbance are further factors affecting the population.
