Although I had earlier seen my first Gadwalls for the season, my real finds for the day were two species which supposedly should not visit the Mexican highlands: one Black-bellied Plover , and several Dunlins. and Canada). The moral of the story? Most winter in the U.S. Don’t let the hurricanes get you down!

The diversity of migrants isn’t as high as in the eastern USA and Canada, but we do get nice numbers of Blackburnians, Black-and-whites, Wilson’s Warblers , and, believe it or not, Cerulean Warblers. A typical scene at Punta Morales. It seems like the species can show up one year at certain spots and be absent the next.

Who cares for your ducks in the winter?

I like seeing as many species as possible on my life list, year list, state list, patch list, any kind of list. But even in summer I can usually count on 60+ non-endemic species per visit, and in winter, a decent effort can usually result in 80 or more species. I confess: I am a lister.

This horrible incident has raised some tough questions indeed. In my opinion, neither Harambe nor the child should ever have been at the zoo. Many sanctuaries do not permit breeding.

Kills in Canada, Alaska and Mexico are not included in the count. Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. A species which is the most abundant crane species on the planet.
