Old World waterfowl… and other waterfowl in the Old World

As I mentioned last week, my wife, son, and daughter-in-law spent much of the month of October in Europe. Mute Swans seem equally adapted to human presence in Europe. I was a bit more surprised to find a Canada Goose there as well. Pochards have the most adorable way of feeding, jumping a bit out of the water before diving in.

Puffin Trip in Maine

Fortunately, just like when we visited Washington State , Daisy was amenable to taking a boat ride to see some puffins so on the evening of Saturday, 27 May, we (me, Daisy, Desi, and my mother-in-law) found ourselves on a boat in New Harbor watching Black Guillemots swim in the harbor while we waited for our boat to head out to Eastern Egg Rock.

FLAP is the Fatal Light Awareness Program, located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and this is how they raise awareness. But, yes, there are photographs of dead birds and x-ray images of the damage done to individual birds and photographs of the annual FLAP display, as shown below. Did the model work? It’s not a bad idea.
