They probably evolved from the Canada Goose, and today sport black faces, white necks, and grayish bodies. Captive bred geese and reintroduction went hand in hand with active population management, including predator control and habitat protection. Unlike other geese, Nenes prefer walking to swimming.

Domestic or Ganky Geese

Feral geese run the gamut from pure white to almost entirely gray or brown. 4 Responses to “Domestic or Ganky Geese&# John Mar 6th, 2011 at 9:12 pm I see goose hybrids regularly since the local, nonmigratory Canada Geese happily interbreed with the domestic geese at a county park’s zoo. Road birding in New Zealand

Most threatened endemics are now restricted to protected areas, but I’ve passed a couple of Weka on a country road in Neslon and I saw my first Long-tailed Cuckoo flying across the main road out of Wellington. Feral Turkey are also quite common. But these aren’t the only large ground-loving birds you might encounter.
