THE DUTCH parliament has voted overwhelmingly to ban the ritual slaughter of livestock. This could halt production of kosher and halal meat in the Netherlands – and lead to similar campaigns in other European countries.

A poisoned rodent can kill whatever eats it, and death by poison is a very bad way to go. Three companies refused to comply: Reckitt Benckiser, Liphatech, and Spectrum Group. EPA began cancellation proceedings, and at the eleventh hour Liphatech and Spectrum Group pulled the most dangerous of their products from the shelves.

Both campaigns led to the establishment of national, influential conservation organizations–National Audubon Society in the U.S.

Bea directed me to an interview with Dr. Let's deconstruct: The interview reminds me of how the industry views us and how little they know about the community of people who care about the lives of the animals brought into this world for one reason only: to kill and eat them. Are we pinning people down and force-feeding them vegan burritos?

I was especially interested in “To Hide From God,” the chapter on songbird slaughter and protection in Cyprus. Has it really been 21 years (almost) from the publication of Jonathan Franzen’s New Yorker article, “ Emptying the Skies ,” six years since the documentary with the same name?

It's one that's brought on, no doubt, by the acts of vandalism and intimidation of radical animal-rights groups, but I think it also serves to insulate the research community from any responsibility it might otherwise have to increase transparency and public engagement with the work. It does not make them more or less a "tool."
