ANIMAL rights groups have begun a campaign against the dairy industry's treatment of bobby calves. Australian Dairy Farmers says calves can be left unfed for 30 hours before slaughter but the RSPCA says the practice is "cruel".

THE DUTCH parliament has voted overwhelmingly to ban the ritual slaughter of livestock. This could halt production of kosher and halal meat in the Netherlands – and lead to similar campaigns in other European countries. Excerpted from the Irish Times.

For some people, it is inhumane to eat meat in any situation, no matter how well the animal is treated prior to and during slaughter. In other words, the proverbial happy farm animal. However, the factory farm system we have in any country does not lend itself to either of the two criteria. There are many gruesome pictures too.

The meat industry is inherently destructive and inhumane, there is no way to make it otherwise, and much of the harm it does to ecosystems is by inflicting suffering and death on billions of nonhuman animals, farmed and free-living, each year. Many say you can’t eat meat and be an environmentalist.

We "traditionally" have applied our social mores in some places and not others, and we should go back to "tradition," which I bet has something to do with continuing to care about our dogs while continuing to feign care for "farm animals," as they're value is as food only. It isn't true that animals on farms would be in the wild otherwise.

Parker uses the term "anti-modern farming activists," which is new to me. I prefer "anti-unnecessary slaughter of sentient nonhumans" and it has nothing to do with perceived modernity. The HSUS isn't even anti-hunting ! Besides, is the "modern" veal crate something to be proud of?
