For now, I present a story of an excellent day''s birding on a visit to Los Angeles last week.]. Common birds to the southern California birder, wonderful sights to me. This is one of the Mormon Metalmark family, whose members all look alike, so opinions from more informed butterfly enthusiasts are welcome.

In August, we took a family trip to beautiful San Diego, seeing SeaWorld , LegoLand , and the San Diego Zoo. I’ve taken tours out of Monterey Bay (with pelagic legend Debi Shearwater , now retired) and Half Moon Bay, California ; Newport, Oregon ; and Hatteras, North Carolina. Then we headed back.

Additional helpful design features include the names of family groups against a yellow-and-white striped background on every page corner and having every bird image facing right (except for that Common Loon chick!), I’ve missed this information, especially when I travel to Los Angeles to visit my daughter and her family.

Because I have birded southern California in winter several times there weren’t any of the normally occurring birds that I could get within easy reach of my in-laws house in Orange County. I could go for the American Dipper that was reported in the foothills northeast of Los Angeles.

It was Los Angeles, after all, where mileage has no bearing on time, but where time was precious for my little rescue on this crystal morning. That was my first trip to California Wildlife Center. It’s tribal and familial. I scrambled for a box. The wildlife center was an hour away if I was lucky. I was mortified.
