For now, I present a story of an excellent day''s birding on a visit to Los Angeles last week.]. Common birds to the southern California birder, wonderful sights to me. This is one of the Mormon Metalmark family, whose members all look alike, so opinions from more informed butterfly enthusiasts are welcome.

Because I have birded southern California in winter several times there weren’t any of the normally occurring birds that I could get within easy reach of my in-laws house in Orange County. I could go for the American Dipper that was reported in the foothills northeast of Los Angeles.

It was Los Angeles, after all, where mileage has no bearing on time, but where time was precious for my little rescue on this crystal morning. That was my first trip to California Wildlife Center. They pointed out the puncture wounds, likely infected with bacteria that could quickly kill. It’s tribal and familial.
