I understand there are still people out there who deny human-induced climate change. I, however, am still a California boy, in spite of not living in that state for four decades now, and I still keep track of the weather there. There were plenty of other birds in the area, with 72 species around the reservoir for the day.

Unlike Barred Owls they were accompanied by no great controversy , and unlike Cattle Egrets or Eurasian Collared Doves they didn’t come as an abrupt continent-hopping surprise. There’s a certain suburbanization of the natural as well as the human world. 1978, for reference, was the year of my birth.

The smellier the better, particularly as, unusually for birds, many species can boast a robust sense of smell. In any case, our hang-ups with vultures clearly stem from our own issues rather than any inherently bizarre trait of the species themselves. The California Condor has a story well-known by anyone with an interest in birds.

While we continue to decimate our short and tall grass prairies many species reach their inevitable peril. Here in Colorado many species are affected, but perhaps none more than our beautiful Mountain Plovers and Ferruginous Hawks. The Pawnee National Grasslands continues to be a stronghold for our two species in question.

Animal rights is concerned with preventing the suffering or even use of animals by humans. Wildlife conservation is concerned with protecting wildlife at the level of species or perhaps population. By way of an example take the Western Gulls that I studied on the Farallon Islands in California. It’s only natural.

Mountain Plover, California. 2018 was a good year for Mountain Plover in California, with a congregation (that is what you call a flock of plovers, says the Internets) seen regularly in Antelope Valley from early November on. So, I was excited to read reports in late 2017 of a pair of Whooping Cranes being seen on a cattle farm.
