Last year, in November, I notched up a dozen species of butterflies, an impressive total anywhere in Europe so late in the year. Red-breasted Geese do turn up at Kerkini regularly, and one year I watched a Red-breast mixed in with the Lessers. Perhaps they do occasionally, but not when I’ve seen them.

On a recent visit I threw my bags in the hotel room and went straight there, and got over 60 species of birds in a few hours and fantastic views of Nilgai , the largest antelope in India. Commoner species include Bar-headed Geese , parakeets, shrikes, mynas and minivets. You should also see Gharial and Mugger Crocodiles there.

Crocodiles, Cape Buffalo and Hippos are plentiful. Saddle-billed Storks, Yellow-billed Storks, Woolly Storks, Sacred Ibis, Gray Herons, Reed Cormorants, Three-banded Plovers, White-crowned Lapwings, Blacksmith Lapwings, Egyptian Geese, White Faced Ducks and African Palm Swifts have been there every day.

Even without being on the water it was possible watch birds across the river, as evidenced by my lifer pair of African Pygmy Geese , which flew down the river and landed on the Namibian side. It’s even possible to count exactly the same bird for both country’s lists.

By the cliffs we find several Eurasian Crag-Martins and a consolation species – a family of Golden Eagles in the air! The next morning is for the Kerkini Lake, one of the youngest national parks of Greece, protected only ten years ago, in 2006 and inhabited by 11 amphibian, 27 reptilian, 44 mammal and 312 bird species. What to say?

It was the only real highlight at Shinnecock for we two jaded birders, though we did appreciate seeing all three scoters, a whole bunch of Common Eiders , both species of scaup, some Great Cormorants , and a bunch of Red-breasted Mergansers. all three of the Greater White-fronted Geese we spotted with a bunch of Canada Geese.

In talking to the local guides, and Rangers, they all agreed that they had not been seeing too many species around in the last couple of weeks. Where else but in Wyoming will you find Peacocks and a Buffalo together? Little Big Year species – 888. The surprise addition to that list was a pair of Pectoral Sandpipers.
