They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!).

Some African Skimmers pass by some African Buffalo. As well as being a great river to cruise for game, you can also see great birds like Water Stone-curlews , Madagascar Bee-eaters , Goliath Herons and Red Spurfowl. One is even skimming. More African Skimmers, this time with some Yellow-billed Storks .

Ndumo Game Reserve lies in the Easternmost part of South Africa, close to the border of Mozambique and Eswatini. It is not particularly big but has a reported 430 bird species including migrants, though during my short stay it seems I missed most of the key attractions among them. The tendency of birds to alight onto the wooden posts, steel towers, and metal wires that constitute our power and communications infrastructure turns any car ride into exciting and endless game of drive-by identification. And we move on to the next speck looming ahead and the game repeats itself, over and over.

These vast and rugged lands of savanna, hills, gorges and rivers still protect some of Ethiopia’s largest extant herds of typical African savanna game, including African Elephant, African Buffalo, Giraffe, Lion, Leopard, African Wild Dog and numerous species of grazers. Yellow-billed Stork.

But even without huge herds of elephants large game is defiantly the major draw for most people on the cruise. We visited in the rainy season, to the point where our first attempt to head out was ended by a particularly monsoon-like downpour.
