The bird-richest region of Africa is its equatorial East: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi (unlike the rest, the last one, Burundi, is politically unstable and not recommendable). At the time of writing, Uganda has 16 hotspots with 400+ so far eBirded species, of which one has almost 600 species. SERVIR Africa Workshop.

During breeding season, their white plumage turns a delicate pink color, a lovely sight indeed.

One of my most cherished birding sightings in Uganda was seeing a distant male hornbill land by a walled up hole in a tree and feed its mate. Birds behaviour Borneo breeding hornbills Singapore' Oriental Pied Hornbill. I still like hornbills, and have been luck to see many different kinds of hornbill around the world. We can hope!

Africa’s pelicans can be a bit confusing on the identification front as Great White does show an overall pink blush in its plumage during breeding season whereas the pinkest part of Pink-backed Pelican is its lower back, which is only seen in flight! They have a discontinuous distribution but are found on every continent except Antarctica, yet until this year I had only ever seen them in one place, Lake Mburu in Uganda. Thick-knees tend to be social, particularly in the non-breeding season, and this was one of their loafing areas. Nine Bush Thick-knees, ah ah okay I’ll stop.

Birders who have been to California might be familiar with the latter two, indeed we would be close to the Poor Knights Islands later in the day, the site of the only breeding colony of Buller’s Shearwaters in the whole world. One birder from Australia even got his lifer Red-crowned Parakeet !
