It now exists only in 4 breeding colonies at 2 locations on the coast of Morocco and a recently rediscovered relict colony in Syria, where it had been declared extinct for 70 years.

The difference in the name is subtle and the nominate, Chroicocephalus cirrocephalus cirrocephalus is from South America, so the locally favoured title, Gray-hooded Gull, would be more acceptable to North American birding aficionados, but I maintain that a hood would continue down the nape to the top of the back, which it clearly does not.

The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. Like most maps, colors are used to indicate seasonal status (breeding resident, Austral migrant/visitor, Boreal migrant, etc.). Tintaya’s woodpeckers also nicely feature tree (and cactus!)

Yes, it’s nice to have information on 817 birds, and it’s wonderful to have full descriptions and photographs of birds commonly seen in Central and South America. It was actually a very easy count since each species account is one page long except for Red-tailed Hawk and Dark-eyed Junco, which get two pages each.
