The Brown Pelican and the Peruvian Pelican are closely related and once were considered the same species. They are indeed very similar in all plumage stages, but the Peruvian Pelican is nearly twice as big as its northern counterpart. Brown Pelicans in non-breeding plumage. The other day I was exploring a new area for the first time, birding the national park that I’ve watched only in BBC documentaries, the place famous for the largest Dalmatian Pelican colony in the world – more than 1300 pairs! Dalmatian and White Pelicans (White = the black ones). Have you heard of it? Can you pinpoint it on a map?

In my homeland, some 800 km / 500 mi further north, these ducks are common on migration but very rare in the breeding season and I realized that these are my first young birds – ever. Several Glossy Ibises , two dozen Gull-billed Terns and Collared Pratincoles , a few Dalmatian Pelicans , Black Terns , Dunlins …. What is killing them?

Most websites – particularly those specifically targeting kids – do not mention the fact that juvenile Australian Pelicans have shown cannibalism ( source ). On the plus side, a website of the Australian Government provides a printout for an origami of an Australian Pelican. Disappointing.

I should have known that birding High Island meant I would be 20 minutes away from a place where hundreds of thousands of shorebirds and waterbirds rest, feed, breed, and generally have a good time. Multitudes, hundreds of Brown Pelicans and Terns–Least, Common, Foster’s, Sandwich, Royal, and Caspian. American Avocets.

Marabous have also learnt another trick, and that is to follow vultures and scavenge off the remains of Lion and other large predator kills. They have even been known to kill children who have been incautious enough to approach too closely. During breeding season, their white plumage turns a delicate pink color, a lovely sight indeed.
