Before I was born, it used to be a rare breeding species in mountainous areas south of Belgrade, but became extinct after the 1960s due to intensive poisoning of wolves. Stopping for a large cappuccino at a drive-in McDonalds en route, soon I entered a hamlet of a dozen family homes mixed with a dozen small apartment buildings.

In one of the first of Dee’s observations about gullers he calls them: “men leaving their homes and their families to spend time peering at arsey birds in some of the arseholes of the world.”. Still, as it turned out, I was a bit disappointed – it wasn’t what I hoped for, gulling, gulling and more hard-core gulling.

I used the family summer cottage as a base camp, placed in an old orchard where no branches are ever cut off, even when old or rotten – only supported from below. Paljuvi Dam, some 30 miles SW of Belgrade, Serbia, is a known angling, but not so well known birding destination. As a result, I had 15 species in the first hour.

Above them, on limestone cliffs, Alpine Swift and Crag Martin breed. Head back to the town of Opovo, south of Baranda, and ask for the Kod Bobe Restaurant (Chez Boba), a second generation in the same family and the best restaurant in the area. Forest covers 70% of the area (hornbeam, beech and oak).

There are a few spots where entering the heronry is allowed and the birds breeding in that section seem to be habituated to the visits. Off we sail to another breeding colony – that of threatened Dalmatian Pelicans. I haven’t said that we are inside a national park and these visits are strictly regulated.

The very best wetland birding around Belgrade, Serbia, is not to be found in the locally famous and tourist-promoted Obedska or Carska Bara Ramsar areas, but at Beljarica Backwaters and the fish farm triangle of Centa, Baranda and Sakule villages, in the Tamis River floodplain. mi, to the Vrbovski turnoff. We continued on to Sakule.

The species are taxonomically divided into two families: Tytonidae, Barn-Owls, and Strigidae, Owls, encompassed in one order, Strigiformes. The chapters on courtship and breeding and roosting and migration are the longest, which isn’t surprising. They roost and hunt, at night (mostly) when we can’t see them.
