This year we have continued to monitor the breeding of several pairs of Pied Oystercatchers along the coast in Broome from Gantheaume Point to Willie Creek on the south side. We have never had a pair succeed in raising all of their chicks and even to succeed in raising one takes a lot of effort because they are so dependent on their parents.

Which these days involves a frenzy to breed and raise a brood. I discovered that one of the Pacific Loons was back, and the first breeding plumaged Purple Sandpiper I’ve seen (having only seen them on fall migration), and Arctic Hare cavorting in their changing coats. In breeding plumage! And now mergansers.

If you remember that the first edition of Sibley was published with “National Audubon Society” on the cover, raise your hand. Using the icons to locate specific bird families takes a little getting used to, but if you do it often it works well as a finding tool. I didn’t.). These are all informative and current.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Another member of the stork family, the African Openbill , looks like it is could benefit from a good orthodontist.

If you have always wondered what the minimum anesthetic concentration for isoflurane and sevoflurane for the Crested Serpent-eagle is, science has an answer. While serpent means large snake, the Crested Serpent-eagle also eats frogs, as this video shows. This included recording a total of 77,760 minutes of video.

The famous Verreaux family who made several expeditions into the province through the 1820’s and 1830’s procuring specimens for rich collectors. The species are taxonomically divided into two families: Tytonidae, Barn-Owls, and Strigidae, Owls, encompassed in one order, Strigiformes. The chapters on courtship and breeding and roosting and migration are the longest, which isn’t surprising. They roost and hunt, at night (mostly) when we can’t see them.
