My recent outing with Seth and Mary when we found probable breeding Bobolinks in Queens was no exception, with a couple of pairs of very confiding Savannah Sparrows singing, foraging, and generally posing for the digiscoping rig. Breeding only above treeline on windswept and desolate rock faces (or equally austere habitats on the Aleutians), the three American rosy-finches (Gray-crowned, Black, and Brown-capped) are extreme environment specialists that are endemic to North America. In the summer, they are the highest altitude breeding songbird in North America.

Similar observation have been made in Cuba and the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico where up to 47,000 migrating Mississippi Kites are counted every season as they fly south. Of all migratory birds breeding in North America, Swallow-tailed Kites are among the first to leave for the wintering grounds.

Their taxonomic status long has been unclear due to their overall similarity and the fact that in eastern North America and Cuba, they hybridize. King Rails occur widely in eastern North America, in eastern and central Mexico, and in Cuba. These are brightly colored birds that breed in freshwater environments.

Populations in the eastern part of its range, including the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and the Lesser Antilles are resident while those in the western part of its range such as Florida, Cuba, Jamaica, and the Bahamas are migratory. By the end of September, the territorial birds that breed in the local parking lots are gone.

They breed in Canada and Alaska, but in the summer they can be found across the United States, as far south as Florida, Cuba, and into Mexico, and as far north as the Pacific coast of Alaska and the Atlantic coast of Maine. For my post this week, I wanted to take a moment to marvel at the impressive range of this super cool species.
