These lands support countless birds, either year-round, as migratory stopovers, or as breeding grounds. For example, the federal government owns less than 1% in Connecticut but nearly 80% in Nevada. The most significant breeding areas in the country are isolated islands in the National Wildlife Refuge and National Park Systems.

Connecticut Warbler - The next-to-last of the expected wood-warblers to get added to my Queens list. The link for Connecticut Warbler , by the way, leads to a bird I wasn’t sure about but that same day I had one that left no doubt in my mind.) Sadly, it did not stick around to breed though I thought that it might.

The ABA currently lumps the Mangrove Warbler and Golden Warbler with the Yellow Warbler (the IOC lumps Mangrove and Golden Warbler together but splits them from the Yellow Warbler that breeds in North America.) Chuk makes his quip about the Black-winged Yellow Bird; my friend Molly insists that everything is a duck, a pigeon, or an owl.

Snowy Owl in Queens, New York, 1 December 2013. Snowy Owls have been sighted as far south as North Carolina and some locations have as many as seven! Here in New York State Snowy Owls have been reported in more than ten counties, with most of those counties having birds being seen in multiple locations. I certainly can’t.

These are extremely large stick structures (some articles compare the largest ones to the size of a car) that are usually populated by multiple breeding pairs in separate chambers. Monk Parakeet is the only parrot species that builds its own nest. Some articles speculate that the nests offer protection against the cold.
