The first shorebird arrivals are apparently birds that failed at a breeding attempt and don’t have time to re-attempt; they might as well head south early. By checking my Facebook feed on a daily basis, I had a broad idea about birds arriving into different countries in Central and South America. Cerulean Warbler.

Of all migratory birds breeding in North America, Swallow-tailed Kites are among the first to leave for the wintering grounds. Kites generally fly to Cuba and then over the ocean to arrive in the Yucatan Peninsula or areas further south. Then, they keep flying south overland to western Colombia.

The Spot-flanked Gallinule Gallinula melanops is a common rallid of southern South America. Despite trawling the internet, it is not clear if these birds are all juveniles, females or non-breeding males. It is common on freshwater in the lowlands and can be found above 7000 feet in Colombia.

… – part 2 – Once I finish this writing, with a strange mix of emotions I will put the Lynx field guide Birds of Colombia to the bookshelf for the first time, more than half a year after I received it. Like a shy stepchild, it’s always eclipsed by the wonders of Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, etc. The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. I got to see a beautiful female and owlet on a trip to a secret nest location near Howard Prairie Lake (human-made nest structures have enhanced local breeding for these huge owls whose nest success is boosted to 83% on artificial platforms vs. 66% at natural sites).
