For once, I was pleased to see our omnipresent local Ring-billed Gulls this weekend, since I realized I didn’t see a single larid while in Colombia. In addition to the camping and camaraderie he took some time to catch up to the local breeding birds of which there were quite a few.

The first shorebird arrivals are apparently birds that failed at a breeding attempt and don’t have time to re-attempt; they might as well head south early. Later come photos of American Redstarts, Black and White Warblers and Swainson’s Thrushes from Colombia a sign these birds started to show up in that country. Cerulean Warbler.

In Costa Rica, the sole tropical breeding albatross is a rare visitor to pelagic waters of the Pacific. A more surefire way to witness this long-winged bird is by visiting breeding grounds on the Galapago Islands. Two are pelagic species, two are resident, and the other one is a mystery. Despite trawling the internet, it is not clear if these birds are all juveniles, females or non-breeding males. It is common on freshwater in the lowlands and can be found above 7000 feet in Colombia. The dark markings are easily visible and obvious, but are not present on the birds shown in this post.

I got to see a beautiful female and owlet on a trip to a secret nest location near Howard Prairie Lake (human-made nest structures have enhanced local breeding for these huge owls whose nest success is boosted to 83% on artificial platforms vs. 66% at natural sites). I photographed this Guianan Cock-of-the-rock at a lek site near Surama, deep in the rainforest zone of Guyana, and my incredible experience with Andean Cock-of-the-rocks was at a display lek on the edge of the town of Jardin, in the coffee-belt of Colombia, both just incredible birds that make the heart soar with joy!
