When I read the description of the Mulga Parrot on a pet website, I first thought it was an advertisement for Thai mail-order brides: “The exotic appearance of the Mulga Parrot might be what attracts you first, but it’s their personality that will win you over” ( source ).

There are charismatic birds like Barrow’s Goldeneye, Evening Grosbeak, Red and White-winged Crossbills; mysterious seabirds like Leach’s Storm-Petrel; ‘little brown jobs’ like Winter Wren and Nelson’s Sparrow; a treasury of warbler species, 27 in all, many state breeders.

I’ve missed the saucy, parrot-like corvids more than I can say since moving back east, so this started my every day on a good note – as did looking out the bedroom window to see Nashville Warblers and Lazuli Buntings moving their newly-fledged chicks around the yard. Now, none of these are great rarities.

He did know all the little roads in the area and as he wasn’t a trapper but a breeder we asked him to show us the way. I have been guided by David Letsoale and Paul Nkhumane for Cape Parrot and other difficult forest species. We were introduced to a local specialist, but this gentleman turned out to be interested in caged birds.

While studying, he also worked on various conservation/research projects (parrots, wagtails, vultures, and anything else that flew) and ringed thousands of birds. In the case of Acorn Woodpeckers, they are cooperative breeders (as with many other polygynandrous species), which seems to predispose species to polygynandry.
