An immature White-tailed Eagle. The same eagle? The main reason was the Ferruginous Duck which duly showed up, but to my surprise, followed by a kettle of two dozen Whiskered Terns… Wait! By the end of the wood, there’s a small wetland, a huge bird above, one more White Stork? Soon I see a huge bird again.

Heronry at Sultanpur

There are a lot of predators drawn to such abundance with Eurasian Marsh Harriers and Greater Spotted Eagles known to take chicks from the heronry. The predators have plenty of opportunities beyond the heronry with countless ducks, waders and galliformes. Eggs often fall victim to the ubiquitous House Crow.

The proprietor of our ecolodge guides my small group of birders up a steep slope where we see, just at the point where a scope view deteriorates into pixels, a huge bird—a Chaco Eagle, also known as a Crowned Eagle—on a huge nest. We are cautioned to keep the location of the eagle a secret. It would be nice to be there now.
