When I was first learning to bird in the summer of 2013, I spent a summer living with my fiance in Virginia Beach. During my three days in Virginia Beach, I knew I had to walk that path again.

SE Arizona 10 day birding blitz!

Lots of warblers were found, including Grace’s, Nashville, Virginia, Red-faced, Hermit, Lucy’s and Wilson’s. In addition, it became quite apparent that many of the birds we were seeing were the first wave of migrants starting to move thru the area. Here is that Red-necked Phalarope.

Wood Warbler Names Done Right

Virginia’s Warbler –which never turns up in Virginia–can be the Big-eyed Warbler. I’d prefer something descriptive like Flamboyant , Orange-throated , or Fire-throated Warbler , but feel free to incorporate other evocative nicknames like fire-brand and torch bird. NAMED FOR PLACES.

We have a lot of mountainous land and it’s way cooler up in them hills than down by the coast or back in the heat-stricken states of Indiana, Virginia, and nearly every other state and province south of Alaska. National Audubon Society Birds of North America: A Guide Review

Interestingly, Chestnut-collared Longspur does appear under its brand-new official name, Thick-billed Longspur, though the description underneath uses the old name. I don’t have a copy of the 1994 Western Audubon Guide, but I bet it would describe Virginia’s Warbler as preferring scrubby brush.
