Interestingly, Chestnut-collared Longspur does appear under its brand-new official name, Thick-billed Longspur, though the description underneath uses the old name. Color-coded page headings denote bird groups, matched by color-coded bird silhouette icons located midway down the edge of the page. These are all informative and current.

That fallacious family name seems to have encouraged all manner of knaves, dunderheads, and miscreants when time came to label species. Appropriate appellations should respect the birds, not 19th century naturalists and their friends and family. Naming a bird species for the part of the world in which it breeds or resides makes sense.

There were three profound questions my birding group discussed while we birded Trinidad and Tobago, back in December 2012: (1) How many Bananaquits could fit on a banana? (2) It is organized taxonomically, with families identified by first scientific and then popular name. 3) What was the best guide to the birds of Trinidad and Tobago?

Brown Pelicans , and the northernmost Brown Booby breeding colony on this side of the Pacific. That larger clade is in turn sister to a clade containing the four remaining totipalmate bird families, which do still seem to be related, and which needed a new order name once pelicans were removed. He could not say the same today.

Each family chapter begins with a brief, bold-printed description of the common traits of the species in the family and an enumeration of the number of species worldwide and the number of species in North America.
