In 1983 I co-wrote a book about a one-day, 24-hour competitive birdwatch that I took part in. Though long out of print, it’s not difficult to pick up copies of the book from secondhand book shops for a modest sum. Though I say it myself, it still makes an amusing read.

The book roughly follows American Ornithological Society taxonomic order; a version date or number isn’t given, but it’s probably the 2020 version, before the Big Reshuffle of New World Warblers.

Azure-winged Magpies are cooperative breeders, and it seems that there is a connection between having a larger repertoire of calls and being a social species (me, not being very social, I usually get by with just three different grunting sounds). for a sample of more than 800 species ( source ).

I’m sure regular visitors to this area could tell you more about how the winds and tides affect the migrating birds and when the breeders start to nest. This was the High Island Experience, I was told. I was just happy to enjoy the show, one that apparently is just as good in winter as in spring. Anahuac NWR–Skillern Tract.

Long story short, the only way I could figure out securing a cabin for myself and my husband, Erik, was to book a trip with Rockjumper, a birding tour company based in South Africa and a supporter of Birdlife South Africa. Regardless, we made it Marion and all else added to the experience. Our Flock to Marion was no different.

Few hobbies place such value on the written knowledge contained in books as does birding. Birders cherish and hoard books above all other trappings of the pastime, and rather than relegating these tomes to the home library or study, they’re routinely carried out-of-doors as constant and dog-eared companions in field and forest.
