A sounder of Indian Boars is watching us from the jungle. They belong to a long-maned subspecies Sus scrofa cristatus (like four-legged Greco/Roman crested helmets) and are my second race of boar seen in India, while I still remain the only Serbian birder who has never seen one closer to home! One Chital is curiously watching us.

In mid-December, I was birding along the Beljarica levee (Beh-LYAH-ritza), my local patch north of Belgrade, when something other than birds attracted my attention: three wild boars , appearing all black because they had just swam through the swamp to reach the bottom of the levee. I think all were males, at last two huge ones certainly were.

There are also wild boars and macaque monkeys and you are advised to not rustle plastic bags, because they associate the noise with food. We encountered a Grey-headed Fish Eagle flying through the area, which kindly landed in a tree and allowed for photography! Grey-headed Fish Eagle. It proved to be a good decision.

Recently, 29 fish species of fish were recorded in this area, together with 8 amphibians, 9 reptiles and 62 species of mammals (including 20 species of bats), together with Wild Boar , Roe Deer , Wildcat , Golden Jackal , Eurasian Otter , European Pine and Beech Martens , Steppe Polecat , Stoat and the Least Weasel.

Were the hydrologists of 1920s worried where the fish will spawn, Wild Boars fatten and eagles nest? Then, between 1929 and 1933, 89 kilometres of embankments were built all around it, cutting it off from the rhythms of seasonal flooding and opening it to agriculture and settlement. Yet, the Beljarica remained open to flooding.

Pelicans and cormorants breeding at the Mikri often go to the Megali Prespa to fish the cold, deep waters – actually, cormorants to dive for fish and pelicans to wait for the cormorants at the surface to steal their prey. Hence, the smaller lake is frozen in winter, while the bigger one never freezes. Maps and guides.

The only mammal species I have observed here were the Brown Hare and Least Weasel , but Golden Jackals and even Wild Boars are present, too. Access: The Veliko Blato lake is being run by the Mika Alas fish farm company, so one needs to ask for a permit in advance ( management contact ), but I have not heard of any birder ever being rejected.
