Animal Welfare Act Inadequate for Farm Animals

Critter News

How many people know this about the Animal Welfare Act? The only cool thing is that Gene Bauer's views on the meat industry are so similar to those expressed on this blog a few weeks ago. Humane treatment runs counter to the entire industry when the point is to make money by processing these animals as fast as possible.

Is There Danger of Elitism in the Animal Rights Movement?

Critter News

This post is inspired by a thought-provoking piece on the Provoked blog (clearly a good name for a blog!) At the same time, do we have the time to wait for everyone to become vegan to enact laws that will at least allow more humane care in the short term. Animal Researchers Promote Sob Stories

Critter News

I don't believe they are working for human welfare. I posted on this blog about quitting because of the New Iberia scandal in Louisiana in which the Humane Society found primates being abused. Where do people get that idea?

On "Compassion," "Nonviolence" and "Justice"

Animal Person

Both animal rights groups and animal welfare groups use "compassion" frequently. What I do know is that I feel an urgency for the causes I care about that blogging, baking, giving money and doing TNR work simply doesn't satisfy. Why all the quotation marks? Then again, so do people who kill animals for a living. Or vegan pumpkin pie.

On The Respectful Emperor

Animal Person

I've been having a difficult time blogging both here and at Animal Rights & AntiOppression lately because I feel like my thoughts are like " Groundhog Day." We are not people who are interested in discussing animal rights, as in, the right of sentient nonhumans to not be used by humans for potential profit, for sport or for lunch.
