From Yellow-hooded Blackbirds to Purple and Common Gallinules , there are almost too many birds to focus on! Last visit we enjoyed superb views of a trio of Masked Cardinals , interrupted by the arrival of a Green Kingfisher that was so intent on hunting, it hardly even cast an eye in our direction.

At some stage, a salmon-hunting bear at a shingle beach came too close, mere 9 steps. Brewer’s blackbird, Euphagus cyanocephalus. Pelican, Pelecanus spp. Red-winged blackbird, Agelaius phoeniceus. Finally, the list of birds mentioned in the examples include: Acorn woodpecker, Melanerpes formicivorus.

The various national versions of Ducks Unlimited are mostly an outgrowth of sports hunting. I have the photos of a standing White-faced Ibis next to wading Northern Pintails , Northern Shovelers , and American White Pelicans , to prove this.) Bronzed Cowbirds may look like those Brewer’s Blackbirds. But I did both.

It’s the boar hunting season. The beech forests were dense, landscapes stunning, only that wind… Birds were hiding from it, too, with mostly t**s ( Coal , Long-tailed and Great ), a few thrushes ( Mistle , Song and Eurasian Blackbird ) and numerous Common Chaffinches showing. Among them are Dalmatian Pelicans , so big and lazy.

Like many “wildlife areas” it is open to waterfowl hunting during the season. We stopped at the entrance to the wildlife area (see the sign above) where there is a small kiosk with bird lists and hunting regulations as well as maps of the facility.
