How about 500 and then 300 and then another 500 and so on, moving constantly past like some odd version of a winter finch irruption or spring blackbird migration. The same goes for Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, and other places along their migration routes. Yeah, I daresay those birds do pass through Costa Rica in the millions.

The Red-winged Blackbirds that were busy staking claims to breeding territory by singing from bushes, trees, and marsh plants were not groggy at all. But Red-winged Blackbirds weren’t the only birds that returned in numbers. Needless to say, I was a bit groggy when I met up with them. But we weren’t done yet!

Although it does occur on a few volcanoes, a more accurate name would be “Paramo Junco” No, not a Eurasian Blackbird. Quetzal also lives in cloud forests in southern Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Here are ten of those special species: This yellow-eyed bird is a Volcano Junco.

The same is true of Guide to the Birds of Honduras , which I reviewed in 2018 and which was also a grassroots project (though Birds of Bolivia obtained greater support from large birding organizations). The hard facts are that a field guide like this simply couldn’t be made without the contributions and good will of these artists.
