Up to 100 kg – possibly a female, my guide and a bear researcher from the wildlife charity Callisto, Yannis Tsanakis, tells me. The Five Valleys Audubon Society is one of the most congenial groups of birders I have ever gone on a field trip with. A vast congregation of Bald Eagles kept watch over a herd of cattle about to calve, up to seven in a single tree — no doubt awaiting delicious placentas. One of the highlights of the trip for me, and for some of the other media folks being hosted by the Fallon Convention and Tourism Authority, was a kayak tour of Tule Lake in the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge. Yellow-headed Blackbirds singing in the reeds allowed us to get an arm’s length away.

It’s not like I had forgotten lists created with friends of ‘songs with birds in the lyrics’, my personal favorites being Sondheim’s Green Finch and Linnet Bird and the Beatles’ Blackbird. A boat ride into this swamp turns up usual suspects like Pied Water Tyrant and Yellow-hooded Blackbird , but also (and most excitingly) three species of kingfisher: Green, American Pygmy and Ringed Kingfisher. After a brief period of no activity on the shore, a small group of Willets in fresh plumage cruised in.
