But occasionally people see it – especially when it’s a hard-to-miss bird like this Bald Eagle. She can land on a transformer once then, the next time, be killed when she brushes up against the jumper wire.

She doesn’t use pesticides, she loves the local wildlife, and she does everything a good pet owner should do. But one day, unbeknownst to her, a wild rabbit dug under the fence. She let her dog out, he spotted the rabbit, and took off like a bullet. If the bird has nestlings, they will all starve to death.

Yes, the earth has gone around the sun twice since the uproar from birders and other lovers of wildlife managed to convince the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to table the idea of hunting Sandhill Cranes in Tennessee for two years. Tennessee started a festival around the event, just for wildlife watchers. It’s bad PR.

Sometimes, I feel that competing bird conservation groups are trying too hard to get my attention and give the impression that just by sitting here on my futon and breathing, I have killed several birds. I just looked over at my husband–bam 5 birds dead. I’m now petting my rabbit Dougal, 6 more birds dead.

I’m not a big fan of bird banding. When I see a band I imagine something slipping beneath it and trapping the bird, I’ve seen photos of birds with so many bands it looks like they’re wearing stockings, and then there’s the awful story of Violet , whose band eventually killed her. And to prove it, there’s The Queen.

Thankfully the days of visiting Africa purely for slaughtering its wildlife have mostly come to a merciful end, and safari operators have adopted the Big Five term to market tours that offer sightings of the fortunate remanants of Africa’s once teeming great herds. They are large, noisy birds of drier areas of East and southern Africa.
