Maybe the latter is because the bird is so plump, or maybe it is because (at least to me) the head looks like it has been created by a somewhat amateurish wood carver. The species is listed as Vulnerable – the estimated number of individuals is 4600-5100 (HBW), of which about 2000 winter on Hokkaido. Back to the eagle.

If its an animal that lives in both like a seal or something similar i could show both. One of the issues with this is that most people dont know anything about oceans or marine animals etc, and a lot of animals would be easier to guess with only continents (like seals and penguins etc).

I’ve been to the Sounds before, but I had never visited them specifically to bird, which means I hadn’t seen the specialities there. New Zealand Fur-seals are the most common pinniped found in New Zealand. This trip was to rectify that. Spotted Shags are endemic to New Zealand.

I will never tire of banging Kaikoura’s drum as the best place in the world to see albatrosses, and since albatrosses are the among the best birds in the world it amazes me that none of you have made it out here yet (actually, some of you have, per some of the comments, but Corey hasn’t). As you can see the birds are really close!

Birding blog trip reports usually are rousing stories of success against incredible odds, or at the very least spectacular failures that make the reader laugh. I only saw a few species I could get in the small park near where I was staying, and not even as many as I could have gotten there. Which brings us to yesterday.

Birds of California , the new volume in the ABA series, arrived the day I returned. Every bird book seems to be about the west coast this month!) With the boat speed what it was, and being the only birder on board, to stop watching meant I might miss an interesting bird. That’s 22 Marine Mammal species and 43 Seabirds.
