This is the home of the Rusty-naped Pitta , admittedly one of the less glamorous of the family, particularly the subspecies found in Yunnan, but still a nice sight and still a pitta. He published a number of books on birds of India and Burma, making me wonder how hard all these overseas civil servants really worked in their day jobs.

The location not being Algiers but rather Nonggang in Guangxi province, China, close to the border to Vietnam. A very rural place, few people, and a landscape more reminiscent of coastal Northern Vietnam than most parts of China. The birds are not closely related. The Chestnut-capped Babbler looks vaguely monkish to me.

I often poke fun at listers I perceive as being more interested in ticks than birds. But there is one kind of tick that I genuinely do enjoy, and as I do more and more birding it becomes harder and harder to get; new families. Getting entirely new families is easy when you start birding.

The Edwards’s Pheasant is a rather smart blue-black member of the pheasant family and it may be on the edge of extinction. It has not been seen in its small home range in central Vietnam since around 2000. Conservationists searched intensively in 2011 but found none. It inhabits rather dry areas within a region notorious for being one of the rainiest parts of the world, and is thus patchily distributed from Burma through Laos, Cambodia, parts of Thailand and south China, all the way to Vietnam. A small brown bird. Boy, this pic (and bird) was surely worth the wait. Surprise, surprise.

I’d seen pictures of them, of course – the stocky, flamboyantly-beaked little seabirds who always seem to be wearing expressions of sympathetic concern – but I’d never seen one “in bird” (the avian equivalent of “in person”). We want all birds to be bursting with health, and we revel in our rare idle moments. said Bau-Hien.

According to the eBird description, it is everything I am not: a “neon-colored, noisy, highly social bird” Shudder to think (not the bird part though). Next, this post has a long section on babblers, a very ill-defined category of birds. But some of them look pretty interesting.
