Faithful fans of 10,000 Bird will know that each Friday Mike invites us to comment where we plan to go birding that weekend. Would Las Mesas, the closest to Morelia of these sites, join their ranks as a prime birding spot? This was my fourth and final FOY bird for the day. Of course, not everything interesting is a bird.

I am sure this means millions of individual birds were displaced by this drought event. But it actually showed the extreme crowding, into the very small remaining area of water, of birds that should have been spread over many dozens of square miles. And are the birds returning with the water?

I soon encountered many of the local birds that I have become very familiar with over recent weeks. When I returned to the small dam where there had been so many Australian Wood Ducks earlier in the day I discovered that the eleven cows had been joined by two Cattle Egrets. Two Cattle Egrets with four cows!

CR being the highest category in the Red List , if I want to see some of those birds, I better hurry! Locals being vegetarians, why are there no birds? That can be traced back in time to 1875, when Alfred Brehm wrote that he had found Sociable Lapwings only alongside the domestic cattle. At first, we observe from afar.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago , it was our time to go and find some new birds! Our actual first bird for Queensland was a Common Myna at the airport and we were surprised that they did not seem as prolific as in Sydney. There’s nothing quite like being woken up by a bird literally laughing at you! Pair of Tawny Frogmouth.
