Moreover, the pair I saw was feeding from a livestock trough alongside a group of cattle. Hardly the elegant, natural picture deserving of some seriously stunning birds! And what I found made me take a step back in time and reflect upon how truly special these birds are. I reported the color-coding of the birds that I saw.

The house is a four bedroom, four bath two story, with a deck running around three sides of the upper story, great for wildlife viewing. Just stepping away from the birds for a minute, because you can’t really do any kind of story about Kruger National Park, and not at least mention the animals. I way under sold this place in my mind.

Its crown was so thick, I could spot the movement, but only rarely the bird itself and never the whole bird, once it would be only its back, once its head, once just legs… slowly, I was putting this puzzle together. The first birds to spot from the boat were Common Terns furiously defending their newly built nests on floating logs.

Nowhere else in Africa do the preconceived ideas of the continent really exist in such living detail; tall, red-robed Maasai herding their skinny cattle, endless grasslands studded with flat-topped Acacia trees and grazed by herds of zebras and wildebeest, and dramatic volcanic calderas brimming with big game and fierce predators!

The tigers keep wandering out of their reserve and taking cattle from nearby villages, taking what little these already poor people have. I, personally, deeply believe that wild places and wildlife have an existence value that should be respected. Then you get down on the ground in that reserve and things become a lot more complicated.

Writing a post scheduled for January 1st for a birding blog is a big responsibility. On the first of the year, every bird is a new bird! It was a United States lower-48 birding year for me.
