A detailed post on this incredible rally is already overdue but in the meantime I felt the need to share a once-in-a-lifetime sighting of one of the scarcest mammals in South America. A Spectacled Bear and its cub performing for us for several hours. The star bird for us all was without doubt a bear. Holy mackerel!

Oddly enough, it is the Western Bluebird that bears the taxonomic name of Sialia mexicana ; but in my experience, the Eastern Bluebird ( Sialia sialia ) is much more common in most of Mexico. While Michoacán doesn’t offer the spectacular tropical tanagers of Central and South America, those we have are also very colorful.

Several come to Costa Rica and a lot of those are, right at this moment, on the move. More should be moving through very soon, mostly on the Caribbean slope.

So the only Patagonia I would choose to visit in the future, is the Patagonia to be found at the southern end of South America. Consider the striking Berylline Hummingbird. But this one did.
