A narrow forest road takes us to the chain blocking the entrance, with a sign “Area closed – bear danger”. This feeding station is not here for the tourists: in order to lower the bee-hive raiding (even the Serbian word for a bear, medved, comes from the word honey – med), supplementary feeding was offered to local bears for several decades.

Not likely, right? Though Corey had a host of good birds to choose from (again) he has decided that his Best Bird of the Weekend was the one he found because he took the time to scope through a ginormous flock of Canada Geese : a diminutive Cackling Goose at Blue Chip Farm in southern Ulster County, New York.

Beside birds, in this park you stand a chance of spotting the Eurasian Lynx , Brown Bear and Gray Wolf ! The national park ranges some 100 km in length along the right bank of the Danube (the left bank is in Romania), where the river varies in width from 5 km / 3 mi to only 150 m / 500 ft and the mountains rise up to 800 m / 2600 ft a.s.l.

In North America, at least in the eastern part of it, we celebrate the return of the Baltimore Oriole to parks and farms this time of year. Baltimore Orioles are surprisingly slight when you get a look at them, but troupials are about the size of a jay, and with the bearing to go with it. The prototypical oriole.

This is not a bird for cubicle farms! The female bird came by too, a stunning bird in her own right if she didn’t have to constantly be compared to the ridiculous male. Now back to all the transient species that I can’t bear missing. Appropriate! may not be accurate. Proud cavity-owners!

That the brewery is somewhat local – just a little drive through the farm country (and productive grassland habitat) west of my home in Albany – is more than enough reason for me to drink Ommegang beers and pay the occasional visit. All this has helped Ommegang become a tourist attraction in its own right.

My anger at the TSA is that I think the grope is a violation of my civil rights, low wage employees get to legally do to me something that any other stranger could be arrested for and I see it as bad theater meant to make me feel safe. Turns out that his theft on the job could total upwards of $50,000 over the past six months alone!
