The Red-shouldered Hawks , the quick flapping Accipiters and the legions of blackbirds and ducks moved through the cool airs of March and April but the orioles, grosbeaks, and wood-warblers wouldn’t show up until the trees had their buds and many had their leaves. At some sites, flocks of 30, even 60 or more birds are expected.

While photographing the Brown Bears in the Russian Far East, a friend of mine, Jovan “Lucky” Lakatos, was with Michio Hoshino, Japanese-born nature photographer specialized in Alaskan wildlife and experienced in how to behave facing this apex predator. At some stage, a salmon-hunting bear at a shingle beach came too close, mere 9 steps.

The researchers flew a quiet quadcopter drone more than 200 times at different angles and speeds near populations of semi-captive mallard ducks, wild flamingos, and common greenshanks — watching the birds for signs of stress, such as head or tail movements or flying away. So far, there aren’t any reports of bird deaths caused by drones.

Near Summit Lake we have been able to witness Williamson’s Sapsuckers ( Sphyrapicus thyroideus ) raising their young in a snag near the campground. Lassen Volcanic National Park is one of the few places that this incredible cavity nesting duck breeds in Northern California. She is in a snag, at least forty feet up!

And because of the resemblance they bear to their New World cousins in the family Phasianidae , they even look the part of an “authentic” wild bird in North America. The same can’t really be said of a confusing Orange Bishop or gaudy Mandarin Duck loose in a city park.

There’s a Sloth Bear in tall, dry grass, barely 50 metres from us, but all we can see is a dark, shape-shifting shadow that eventually becomes all but invisible. The closer one raises her head, than lies back. Telia yawns, raises and sprays her urine on a dead tree stump, marking her territory. The Telia Lake.
