Even though I am pretty sure eyes like these cannot be real and have been taken from some oversized teddy bears. Ideally, however, you should either find somebody else to pay for these toys or at least convince your wife that these toys are not toys but highly useful. I recently watched an online advertisement for The Economist.

What’s in a Name?

Call me old fashioned if you like, but I rather like many of these old names, as they put a bit of colour and interest into birding, especially if you bother to investigate who exactly the birds are named after. They didn’t, of course, have the luxury of the fantastic modern optics we take for granted today.

Birding Cuba, or Observación de aves en Cuba

Of course, it’s the colorful and tiny birds that get the most attention when one thinks of Cuba. They nest in palms, and we found a small area where we observed several couples investigating and preparing nest holes. One male flicker in particular was very busy clearing out a nest hole.

Once you reach Coconut Wells the road bears to your right and just as the bitumen ends you take a left turn towards the beach. The more secluded the beach the better of course! I investigated where the Beach Stone-curlew had been and noticed it had recently deposited a small pile of waste. Pied Oystercatcher egg.
