Based on birding this very morning from the back of my place in Costa Rica, I can guarantee that at least some Baltimore Orioles, Tennessee Warblers , a Painted Bunting and a few other migrants are still far to the south. Wilson’s Plovers are in Breeding Plumage. All the way to Alaska maybe?

North American warblers, on the other hand, often bear names of, at best, marginal utility. Naming a bird species for the part of the world in which it breeds or resides makes sense. Tennessee Warblers may be fairly drab by the prismatic standards of this group, but they certainly get around. NAMED FOR PLACES.

However, even now, the ancient movements of birds between summer breeding grounds and tropical wintering places have been taking place in Costa Rica. Every time it happens, second growth habitat that was used by Yellow Warblers, Tennessee Warblers , and other migrant and resident birds is suddenly gone. It can and does work !
