A narrow forest road takes us to the chain blocking the entrance, with a sign “Area closed – bear danger”. This feeding station is not here for the tourists: in order to lower the bee-hive raiding (even the Serbian word for a bear, medved, comes from the word honey – med), supplementary feeding was offered to local bears for several decades.

Monterrey is a big industrial city, with industrious people. The day was only minutes old and we already had 32 species on the day list. Our agave flower stalk had three species of hummingbird drinking nectar, dive-bombing and stabbing each other: Blue-throated Mountain-gem, Lucifer Hummingbird and Broad-tailed Hummingbird.

The first guide bearing the National Audubon Society imprint was Audubon Bird Guide; Eastern Land Birds , written by Richard Hooper Pough, and illustrated by Don Eckelberry. Pough “with illustrations in color of every species” by Don Eckelberry, Doubleday, 1946. The grand total is 817 species! SPECIES ACCOUNTS.

She doesn’t know the species till it emerges, almost dreamlike, from the heavy glare of the sun. Though the coast of British Columbia, a part of the Great Bear Rainforest, was rich in both, it was appallingly deficient in scientific data. Fox encounters 69 species, some singly, some in huge feeding or migrating flocks.

Tropical Cyclone Joyce dumped 100mm of rain in Perth as it travelled south as a rain-bearing depression and the whole family had the experience of torrential rain in Western Australia. We were busy adding birds to the Year List as we travelled and had left home with 155 species and the number was soon increasing.
